I was having this conversation with the maintenance guy, and it’s now twice that we had such a real talk even though it was so short. The first time was when I was locked out of my apartment when the battery on my door fob went out and now when the light bulb went out on the overhead stove. That is one of the few things I like about renting is that you don’t necessarily have to pay for any maintenance work.
But getting back to our conversation, no matter who or what we do in our lives, you can have some of the most meaningful and real conversations with just about anyone. This man from just a simple set of words shined some light onto something that has clouded my mind that I’ve been trying to figure out for so long and it literally gave me goosebumps when I just realized what I said to him out loud.
An example of what this was is that for well over 15+ years I been a commissioner for a fantasy football league and even though I don’t get enough credit (as most of us don’t), we still do it. This year my nephew who convinced me to get back to co-commission with him for now our 5th year, we wanted to do something special. Since last season, he talked about doing a newsletter for our league of close friends and family, which now has been turned into a reality. I wanted to help out with this and what I contributed was making this sort of Sportscenter type of programming to put on YouTube. It’s of course my own style and weird humor but a weekly report just for the league.
So far, we’re officially 6 weeks in and it’s been going great. It was the one thing that lit a fire in me to actually produce videos that I haven’t been doing in almost 2 years now. But the key element, or probably elements for me was to take perfection out of this and just have fun with it. Although, it’s not much but it is meaningful and by doing this, I wanted our league specifically to be why we’re one of those fun leagues everyone can appreciate.
And to get back to the maintenance man, he told me how even though we’re constantly moving forward so rapidly in life and with AI, it starts to take away jobs and how we’re forgetting the finer things we’ve done in the past that got us there. And with what I’m doing here is a great example of getting us back to that feeling. He said he believes in me and no matter how little it is or who it’s from, when you talk to someone, things like this here gave me hope and I was incredibly appreciative of him for that.
Something people tend to talk about is how with YouTube specifically, we’re so focused on the algorithm and trends that we start to lose touch on our own creativity and having that old-school style of the early YouTube days. This is something I started working on. But with my little weekly report for the league, I’m doing it for them as a treat.
Don’t worry though, I haven’t forgotten there’s more I’m working on that’s for me personally. We can’t forget to love ourselves because that’s what’s so important to share with others who we are. Be free. Have random conversations with anyone because you never know just how much that could make their day… or yours!
